Growing up on Martha’s Vinyard in this tight community has allowed her to grow up happy, healthy and proud of her lineage, until the day the “scientist” arrives from England to study the deaf community. This means that Mary, and all the other deaf residents, have never had to conform to the hearing world’s expectations she has not had to try to learn to talk with her voice or to read lips, for example. Everyone, deaf or hearing, speaks sign language so that the community can all work together and no one is excluded. Mary is growing up on Martha’s Vinyard in the early 19th century in a community with a high population of deaf people.
